20th February U14 Girls - Session 6 Final Session

Session Objectives:

By the end of the session participants will be able to:
1. Have fun and enjoy the football.
2. Demonstrate the skills learn over the six week period.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the rules learnt over the six week period.

Session Evaluation.

As this was my last week with the group I decided to run a 4v4 tournament to bring all of the skill I had learned the girls together and see how they had developed. I mixed the skill levels of the group so all teams where even, I reminded them all of the skills and drills we had covered then emphasised that this tournament was for fun and no results were going to be recorded.

When watching the matches I found that all participants where playing football and really trying to use the skills they had learnt over the previous weeks. Emma’s team where all including her and finally I feel she now does not feel socially evaluated for the first time in her school life. I hope she will continue doing my session over the next few sessions as I feel she has the ability to become a key team player.

13th February U14 Girls - Session 5

Session Objectives:

By the end of the session participants will be able to:
1. Close down there opponent.
2. Get goal side and mark there opponent.
3. Tackle and win a challenge at a walk through pace.

Session Evaluation
It is important to carry out a warm up to prepare the body and muscles for exercise. (Reilly 2003) As I put this point across I asked for group participation and they decided what we were going to include and what areas of the body to stretch. As we have been warming up for a number of weeks now everybody was able to confidently give and exercise and the group worked well together.

Through out the drills the more experienced participants started to help the weaker players and I could stand back and observe this dedicating more time to Emma and helping progress the drills on when needed. After completing the drills I dedicated the last 10 minutes of the session to formations and positions. As attacking and defensive formations are viewed as complimentary aspects of the same process (Jones 1999) I was able to discuss them together with the whole group as one. They decided where they wanted to play in the match next week and I helped decided positions as it is going to be a kick around in our last training session, two equal teams working on skills that have been developed over the last five weeks.

I feel that all objectives where met and as I think it is important for even strikers to know how to defend this point was put across. Everybody enjoyed the session and is looking forward to next weeks match.

6th February U14 Girls - Session 4

Session Objectives:

By the end of this session participants will be able to:
1. Take a shot and aim on target.
2. Get the ball off the ground in the goals direction.
3. Add power to the shot in the correct direction.

Session Evaluation

Although I felt last weeks session went well I thought it was important that I took control this week and went back to a democratic style of coaching as the skills where more precise and differ cult. Scoring a goal is always a motivation to continue playing football (Gadston 2001) therefore I wanted to give everybody the experience of feeling intrinsically motivated by scoring in my session.

I also know that when praised by me I’m offering extrinsic motivation and I felt this was important for each individual player to feel they had performed well and to a good standard. Emma got a lot from this session and I feel she now has a basic understanding of passing, controlling and shooting which I hope she continues with over the next couple of weeks.
All session objectives where met although lifting the ball of the ground was maybe a bit to ambushes for the whole group, but generally everybody got the idea. I feel over the next two weeks I must continue motivating the team to play together and a team and help them motivate each other.

30th January U14 Girls - Session 3

Session Objectives:

By the end if this session participants will be able to:
1. Dribble the ball slow and at pace.
2. Dribble the ball avoiding static objects.
3. Dribble the ball avoiding moving targets.

Session Evaluation

From the start of the session I knew I had to improve team cohesion and as we where working on dribbling I decided the whole group could work together and help each other improve. Using the inclusion style of coaching descried by (Mcshane, 2002) this allows the participants choice there own difficulty but overall there are taking part in the same drill altogether. I set up three grids and explained and demonstrated the drills that were linked to the three session objectives, one grid per objectives.

Half way through the session I ask everybody to stop as there concentration levels had fallen. Concentration is the key to been successful at sport (Moran 2002) so I pulled everybody together and explained what I expected form the group and how we needed to work together as a team to progress once on the football pitch. The message got across to all participants and for the first time everybody was working together to make the session a success.

Overall I feel the session went well and all of the objectives where met. Introducing the teacher in to assist Emma also helped as she was able to remind her of the drills whilst I assisted other group members.

23rd January U14 Girls - Session 2

Session Objectives:

By the end of this session participants will be able to:
1. Control the ball with there feet and look up to see next pass.
2. Control a ball from in the air with there feet.
3. Move from a closed to open environment doing this skill.

Session Evaluation
As this was just my second week training the girl I wanted to still ensure I had control over the group so continued with a democratic training style and may do so for the whole six week period. To start with I decided to split the group in to pairs and ask them to throw the ball at different heights to allow there partner to get used to the skill in a closed environment. (Maher 2006)
After doing the drill repeatedly from different heights I progressed the stronger members of the team on to work in a more open environment. I did this by giving four groups a 10x10 square where they where asked to do the same drills but be aware of the people around – space awareness. (Gambetta 2007)

I have found this week increasing difficult working with Emma as she has learning difficulties. I feel she demands more time and work than I can possible give when I am working with such a big group. Over the next few weeks I am going to ask the teacher to come out and help assist so that Emma is still able to enjoy her self but everybody else is getting the same amount of assistance and attention from me.

All session objectives where met and I could see progression in all of the participants. I feel it is going to be an on going problem that the team has not gelled yet so I need to work on this over the next few weeks.

16th January U14 Girls - Session 1

Session Objectives:

By the end of this session participants will be able to:
1. Pass the ball along the ground to a static target.
2. Pass the ball to a moving target.
3. Pass the ball whilst moving to a target

Session Evaluation
As this is my first session with the group I want to ensure I have full control over the group and like the boys session start with an autocratic coaching style. (Horn, 2002) The ability of the group is very mixed and this became very apparent whist doing the first drill which was passing in pairs.

I was informed at the start of this session that one participant has severe learning difficulties but was really enthusiastic and wanted to take part in the sessions. This I decided was going to be my project over the next six weeks and I am going to do my best to make all sessions simple for her to under stand and take part in, also ensuring team cohesion. (Weinberg, 2006)

I chose the pairs to ensure the skill levels where equally paired off but also to ensure that nobody was left out. After explaining the basic pass and technique most of the participant began showing a good level of understanding and I moved it on to passing with the partner with out a ball moving in to space to receive the pass.

All the learning objectives were met but a lot more work will be needed to be done before players properly appreciate the importance of looking up before making a pass. All session objectives were completed but I do feel over all control could be improved when receiving a pass from team mate.

Introduction to U14 Girls Coaching

The Group
The group I am going to coach this semester are aged between 12 – 13 and female. The girls have a general level of skill and I can see the opportunity to really develop there skills further. As it is a school team there participate for a large number of reasons from been with there friends to wanting to play for England in the future. All of the girls are interested in football but do not totally understand the rules and have a basic knowledge of the game. As all of the girls take part in PE twice a week and most do all other extra curriculum sporting activities they have a good level of fitness.

Skills
The group all have a good level of knowledge and skill at football. 80% of the group are young sport leaders, learning how to demonstrate good social and team cohesion. The team have set targets for where they would like to be in the next year and how they are going to reach each of there goals.

What do they want to do?
With my previous experience at coaching boys I fell that I am now ready to take over the team and make it my own. The school teacher, Miss Haslam has overall control of matches and fixtures but the team is selection and sessions are up to me. When taking this team it was explained that the good players with higher ability carried the team and didn’t really include the whole team. Although this tactic has worked and they have been school champions for the last 3 seasons I would now like to improve the B team up to that level and bring back the champions and runners up of the league. The school also has a chance to represent Newcastle if they win in the next local 7 a side competition with the best schools in the region. This will give them the first chance of some silver wear this season.

The Coaching Sessions
In the session over the next six week period I hope to progress the sessions from starting at a very basic level then moving it on to skill training and at a pace where all abilities are having fun but learning at the same time. The sessions are often held the day before match day which generally takes place on a Thursday with training on a Wednesday. This will allow me to help the team prepare for the match the day before with the tactics still fresh in there mind s to go on and win the matches. As the participants are only young I will ensure that we have regular breaks and take on liquid often.

Programme Objectives

By the end of the six week coaching plan the intention is that players will:

1. Have the ability to pass the ball over a short distance, moving on to longer passes in the correct direction.
2. To be able to dribble confidently keeping head up and awareness of the surrounding area.
3. Been able to shoot from all ranges on target – working towards a more powerful shot.
4. To have a basic understanding of defensive techniques; closing down and showing inside and out.
5. Have a basic level of ability to control the ball and then look up for the next stage of play.
6. Basic understanding of the rules and regulations.
